Every year Flip City trots out our annual list of the worst of the worst of what we all wish wouldn't have happened this past year.
Proving you can always count on Africa to keep it classy, South African Parliament member Julius Malema took to a Johannesburg soccer stadium stage this year to lead incendiary chants of "Kill The Boer", directed at the descendants of South Africa's Dutch settlers.
"Boil the Boer in the Pot" is actually an ancient tradition that predates colonialism.
Not to be outclassed, in August the New York Times rushed to the defense of the chant, dismissing it as a relic of abandoned apartheid-era sentiments, and as mere traditional folk music, insisting "it is not to be taken seriously", and that the literal call to violence "should not be taken as a literal call to violence." The article ignited righteous outrage with even South Afrikaner Elon Musk taking to his platform X to pile on.
When asked about the controversial lyric, Malema responded, "What big deal?" Stop making giant termite mountain out of termite mound." •
"Relax, it's just a chainsaw and I'm only going to kill you with it."
